16 Punjabi youths likely to return home from Pakistan

AMRITSAR: Sixteen Punjabi youths and one from Haryana are likely to soon return home from gallows after the civil court, Sharjah, announced to deposit a compensation of Rs 15 lakh for two Pakistani nationals - Mushtaq Ahmed and his brother Shahid Iqbal - who were injured during a fight over liquor in 2009 in which another Pak national Misri Khan had died.

President of Dubai-based NGO Sarbat Da Bhala, S P Oberoi, who is contesting the case informed TOI on Thursday that "the decision has been pronounced but the court will remain closed for two days due to public holiday and on Sunday morning, I will deposit the compensation money in the court following which the ban on travel to 17 Indian youths will be lifted."

He said there would no case left on the boys after that and their death sentence had already been waived off, they had cleared civil and criminal cases and their travel documents were ready, he said. All 17 Indians were awarded death sentence on charges of killing Misri Khan, a Pakistani ational.

After much persuasion, family of Misri Khan had agreed to receive blood money of Rs 8 crore for pardoning them. In July 2011, Oberoi had paid the money to Zafar Iqbal, a representative of Misri's family, following which the Sharjah court on September 12, 2011 ordered their release.
